ELLA RANG THE DOC: the end of gastroenteritis? La fin de la Gastro?

A couple of days ago, I received a call from Mrs Calamity.

Jane Calamity is the mother of 4 and lives in Paris.

Before going on holidays with the family team, she realized the youngest (4-month old) had red spots all over the skin; she had to leave her to the nanny and when going back 1 week after, all rested, she found out the nanny and then the 4 children, had chicken pox as well! She had to nurse the 5 until recovery! That said she gave me a good tip when I mentioned my daughter was suffering from gastroenteritis (tummy bug) very often: was I not aware of the gastro immunisation, she yelled me in horror?! I rang the doctor straight away and tried to sweeten my growing anger: why did not you tell me about the gastroenteritis vaccine ? The doctor replied in a diplomatic way that this immunisation was quite recent and was usually given to children before the age of 6 months. Also this vaccine only covers for certain types of gastro and does not last forever. This vaccine (2 types: Rotateq and Rotarix) should help reducing severe cases mostly observed on babies for whom dehydration is difficult to contain.

Once again, do not hesitate to call your doctor for suitable advice.

Il y a quelques jours, je recois un appel de Madame Calamity. Jane Calamity est mere de 4 enfants et vit a Paris. Avant de partir en vacances avec l'equipee familiale, elle s'est rendue compte que la derniere (4 mois) etait couverte de boutons rouges. Elle dut finalement la laisser a la maison avec sa nanny. Quand elle revint apres une semaine de soleil et de detente, elle les a retrouvees, les deux, ainsi que ses trois autres enfants, tous contamines par la varicelle! Elle a du ainsi s'occuper des 5 jusqu a retablissement complet. Ceci dit, cela a ete l'occasion d'apprendre une nouvelle interessante: lorsque je lui ai fait part de la recurrence de gastroenterite chez ma fille, elle m'a lance, horrifiee: "Quoi? Tu ne connais pas le vaccin contre la gastro?" J'ai tout de suite appele mon pediatre et lui ai demande pretendument detendue (tout en pensant, elle me le paiera!): "Pourquoi ne m'avez vous pas parle de ce vaccin??" Elle a repondu comme a l'accoutumee de son petit ton hautain, mais de facon tres diplomate, que le vaccin etait recent et etait habituellement administre avant l'age de 6 mois. D'autre part, ce vaccin (de 2 types: Rotateq et Rotarix) ne traite que certains types de gastro et n'est efficace qu'entre 6 et 12 mois. Il vise a limiter les cas extremes et difficiles a traiter a cet age, de deshydratation.

Pour un avis pointu, preferez bien sur celui de votre medecin!
